The Pilgrim's Progress- Ralph Vaughan Williams

March 31, 2019

The Pilgrim’s Progress tells the story of an everyman figure – Pilgrim – who journeys from his home, the City of Destruction, to the Celestial City on Mount Zion.

Inspired by John Bunyan’s text, Vaughan Williams turned the 1678 religious allegory in to a universal tale of spirituality moving beyond the confines of Christianity. However, The Pilgrim’s Progress unashamedly sides with the Pilgrim in stressing the righteousness of his journey.

Puccini Double Bill: Suor Angelica / Gianni Schicchi

November 07, 2018

Puccini’s trio of one-act operas, Il trittico, highlights the dramatic, tragic and comedic best of this giant of Italian opera. In December, RNCM Opera will perform two of the operas from this stunning work.

Suor Angelica is a heart-wrenching tale set in a convent. It contains moments of harrowing drama and unequalled redemptive beauty. This will be followed by the scintillatingly devilish comedy of Gianni Schicchi, in which a family of hypocrites are duped out of their inheritance.

Cendrillon by Jules Massenet 6-16th Dec

December 16, 2017

A fairytale for the festive season, in Cendrillon, Jules Massenet gives the story of Cinderella a perfect French operatic form with plenty of wit and style. This opera reveals Massenet at his most inventive and highlights his gift as a comic composer.

Cendrillon is a thrilling work, alive with drama, humour and even a touch of bitter sarcasm. It takes us to a fanciful time and place, with vividly drawn characters, magical love, and enchanting dreams – plus the music is as appealing, and dreamily expressive, as anything Massenet ever composed.

This production will be sung in French with surtitles.
